Well put Butch,
Although the Gaylord
name is a unifying
umbrella for all
generations, I also
get the impression
there are differences
in what the Gaylords
represented in every
period.
I can only speak of
the late sixties and
early seventies.
That time frame to me
represented a
necessary evil of
gang life driven by
the need to
survive. I can
assure anyone, that
living on Palmer and
having to go to Latin
King dominated
neighborhood for
grade school or
playing basketball
(in a Richard Daley
failed program to
keep the gangs off
the streets) only to
see your friends
shot/killed or end up
in Statesville was
not a romantic or
glamorous lifestyle.
These days when I sit
on my deck sipping a
scotch, smoking a
cigar and telling
stories to friends, I
can afford to
romanticize that
lifestyle a bit â ¦.but
only because no
matter how long or
how far removed from
Palmer, it has in
many ways defined who
I am today.
