It was good to finally meet you. Rocker and you have done a lot with your website to re-connect me with some of my old Boys and younger Bros.
For a long time we wouldn't talk about the past. We thought we were doing the right thang and people hated us for that.
I would also like to say how much I admire the Bros that held things together during the 80's and early 90's. I also would like to see more guys from Kilbourne at the next reunion. That park was our Nation's Vatican.

Just wanted to thank all the GL's who I met this past week. Especially the guys who took me out to the corners and toured the hood with me. I have several hours of footage to go over while editing the documentary. I could not get to all the guys, as I traveled around Chi-town. I will have to plan another trip. I have some really great interviews, which at times will make you laugh and smile , and other times feel sad and cry.
I also could use some non GL's to tell me some stories about some hum-bugs / battles they had with GL's. I would be a great addition to the documentary, and would validate all the stories I got on tape already.
What I really need now is old PHOTOS of you guys . You can send photos to that address above, and he can forward to me, or feel free to email me at gangfilm@hotmail.com

Allen B., this goes out to you. Many guys on here do not recall your more sinister days of claiming that you belonged to pretend gang called "Ghost Lords." That was years ago. Back then I think you even said that you were an offical GAYLORD, from around Pulaski and Irving. I am sure even SPGL can comment on when you wanted to be SPGLN and started to use the name "Blacky."
Yeah, your whole career on the net has been an entertaining one. It was funny how you used to come on the Chicago Hoodz chat room with a whole barrage of questions for everyone on there. It was obvious that you were trying to get information for your site. Nothing wrong with obtaining info, news reporters do it everyday. The sad part is that you never took in to consideration that you were getting tainted facts. I mean its the chat and who knows who your really conversing with. You might think your speaking with a real MLD but it could just be a fat chick looking for attention in any shape or form.
Now you writing a book. I have to admit that this makes me cringe a little. Its like a ten year old writing about what real love is. The botton line is that most of your facts on certain clubs is basically wacked. Its like you just pieced a bunch of crap together and said, "Looks good to me, I think they will all buy it." A year ago or so an SCR had you beliving that the "GAY" in GAYLORDS stood for "GRAND AVENUE YOUTHS." You said that you really documented this info and it was 100% legit. You came off like a college professor so much on the subject that even the Gaylords website was buying into your twisted facts. It took them nonths just to research things out to find that was false information.
Your SCR history was dead wrong also. They did not start in the 1950s. They started in 1974. An SCR told you 1950s to make them look as historical as the GLN, and you fell for it. Go ask the CHICAGO POLICE DEPARTMENT. I do not even want to comment on the rest of the gangs either. I would be here for days.
I can not believe that bangers readily produce photos for you and your site. Its a shame because it adds credablity to your false info. I guess they are just buying in to their egos when they give you authentic material.

First of all, I think one of the main reasons that a few of my comrades meet with you on the side and socialize is because you were from an IGN set that many guys vaguely recall. As for me. I personally did not bang against you. Your set was like undiscovered territory that many GLN did not venture to. I am sure you have a different perspective. Matter of fact, I know you do. Hey I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed and I don't want to correct anyone or be out of line but we were dealing with the SCR before 74. I am no historian but I know they were around before 1970.
I am not sure of the exact dates but in the early 70's the Royal's and Gaylord's got along. A strong contingent of Gaylord's (I was one of them) were at Arab's Wake at Cooney's Funeral Home on Southport. After which we all went after the Dueces.
Quite a few Royals hung at Lennie's by Lane. I know at least one of the guys in the picture of Lennie's Storm Troopers is a Royal.

Some older LAGL have stated that there was no SCR before 1974. They even recall Bimbo and a few others stating that they were starting the "Royals" around Hamilton School around 1974.
Added to that little tidbit, the SCR show no OFFICIAL documentation of being around before that time period. The oldest SCR compliment card bears Bimbo and his boys and this proves the LAGL story even more. There is even a "Fist City Royal" gang card from the early 1970s and I personally believe that this was an early experiment of the Simon City Royals.
What about all the eyewitness accounts of the gang, "Simon City" still being active in the very early 1970s? Woody from Rienberg School recalls them for instance. And with this being true, I do not see the Simon City peacfully accepting another club copying their name at the same time.

I used to work at the gas station at Lincoln and Addison from 1971 to 1975. The Royals were around at that time and were using the Simon City Royals name. I used to bust their stones by asking where the hell was Simon City? I knew several of them and I used to eat at Man-Jo-Vins often. Apeman and several other Royals would come by the gas station to mooch cigarettes off me when I was working. They were also around Belmont and Ashland and Lincoln. I used to run into them at the bowling alley there. If I would have known anyone was going to give a shit 30 years later I would have taken notes!! 30+ years have not left me with a perfect memory as far a dates go.
I'll try and contact Pyro and see if he can get us better info. He used to live in the neighborhood and grew up there before he moved to Irving and Central.
The Dueces were called Young Dueces, Isane Dueces and several other variations but it was still the same assholes from the Clybourn Projects. We used to just call them the Projects because we didn't show any respect for their club.
The white Young Dueces hanged at a school called Young school yard.I recall it was on Belmont before Damen. Pyro now lives in norridge somewhere. He coaches baseball and has a couple kids.I remember Pyro and Bam bam got beat real bad with tire irons on a cta bus by the Project Dueces's.Back then pyro was calling it for the SCR'S at Lane Tech H.S.I hanged with Baby face and Bam bam from Chi west. Pyro was a Royal from Rosevelt H.S.Thats where Bimbo and many Royals from Lane came from.At Lane we even had the Brewer brothers and the North Suburan Popes coming around. I recall two big guy called Professor and Slaughter from the Popes coming to Lane for a fight with the Dueces.This was in 1975.In 1976 the Gaylords ran Lane Tech. This is the year we were attacked by the SpanishLords and the Project Dueces at Lennie's. The following year Lennie's closed and became DENNIS THE MENISE GAME ROOM.In 1977 I called it at Lane for the Gaylords.My last year we were in constant war with the Royal and Popes at Lane.We started having problems with Chi West and with the Latin Lovers who now made a move at Lane with the backing of all the blacks.By 1979 the school was taking over by latino gangs.A few of our younger guys were still left.A lot of Royals starting going there and our club became part of the people organization. There WERE SCR'S BEFORE 1974.Their main sets WERE St. Andrews, Hamilton School and The Barracks near Irving & Ashland. Many SCR's went to Lakeview and they held their own. Most joined to fight the Latin Eagles who were a real punk organization.
A-Rab and his brother A-Hab were two original SCR's. The Dueces had a couple of their slutbags set A-Rab up for the kill.When he was alive they were cool with the Almighty Gaylords. After he was wacked they lost several other guys within two years. Someone else, whose name I'll leave out took over and that Greaser Club went down hill real quick.
I have a good source in regard to SCR history, good but not the best. The dude joined in 1971, he was just a rank & file soldier that doesn't have an ax to grind with anyone except Punk Eagles. To be honest he doesn't know when Simon City let the Royals merge with them. All the dudes that are named in the other comments were major players in that organization.
I went to Hamliton Park with a Royal friend named Robin.I recall Mike Brewer coming to Lane to welcome in Robin into the SCR.I went by Lakeview H.S looking for sweaters with the Royals.We chased several Latin Eagles on my vist with them.Back then the Hamliton Royals were mainly fighting the Latin Kings and the Latin Eagles.The following year Bimbo was killed and we all went to the funeral on Western Av.I went with all the gangs at Lane.We were a mix group of Ufo guys from all sections and clubs. Later that week all the ufo met at Rosevelt H.S in the back of the school.I was suprised that Chi-West even Chi West show up.I remember Turpo, Bam-bam, Brad and I pulling up on the Royals to see how we could help.We were carrying sawoff shotguns in the trunk.The Royal's said they were going to handle it.I went with them to show that the Gaylords were behind them all the way.A Lawndale Gaylord was with Bimbo in there club house when one of there guys told them the white Latin Kings were out there tagging there mural at the school.Well it turned out to be a setup.That lawndale Gaylord has his back window blown out by the shotgun fire from the Kings.A rummor was that Bimbo beat this one King severly and but his face on a curb.I guess he knocked out all his teeth and gave him a permant smile.Later after this happen we went to war with the Popes.The Royals took sides with the Popes.All the other White Gangs sided with us at Lane.When the Popes came around Lane we had the C-note ,Playboys, Riceboys and Chi-West back us up.It was to bad the Royal took the Popes side and we couldn't resolve this conflict.I know I had problems because I was friends with many Royals that went to Lane.Guys like ROBIN,POCKETS,PYRO,SWEDE,WOLF,THEO,were now my enemies.Like many Gaylords at first we refused to fight against our old friends.Until they started trying to kill guys on Lawndale we could no longer leave them alone.Several times Lawndale marched to Milwakee Av to there hangouts and destroyed there place.To be honest we were busy fighting O/A'S and Palmer St Imperial Gangsters most of the time.When most Royals seen me they just smiled and walked there way.Most knew I wasn't really into fighting them.Only one time can I recall actually beating Popes and it was because they wanted my sweater.I was lucky because there was over 50 Popes and Royals out side Dennis's [the old Lennies].Well I was lucky because Theo walked in and we were like best friends when he went to Lane. Now he was leading the L/R Popes.I stood there with a huge butcher knife I grabs from jumping over the counter.They stood there looking at my Gaylord sweater. Theo smiled at me and turned and walked away.I most likely would have had to kill some of them to keep them all off me.I'am not superman and the C-note just stood there and were no help.I was trapped like a rat, but Theo knew I would fight for my sweater.I think he made the right choice by letting me slide. They most likely would of killed me, but I would of took a couple of them with me.Back them you would have to kill me to get my sweater.Back then the Royal's and Popes were honorable until they became a drug dealing mixed mob which they let anyone in!Well our guys from the 80's from Lawndale really tore into there ass after that.The Royal's turned into scum of the earth.I hope one day they see the light and turn around there club like us Gaylords. The SCR's of Ashland and Irving (Lakeview HS)started long before 1974. In the late 60's, they were allied with the Aristocrats from Barry and Seminary streets.
Tuffy, if he ever fought Mike Kraft...it had to be a joke. Mike was a big guy and several years older than I. He'd pop in over at the pool hall to shoot with Arab and Willie once in a while. His hanging days were already a bit behind him, but he was still a Royal.
Arab knew me well, but Ahab and I never spoke much. Just a hello and how's it going.
Tuffy's older brother Pat was a senior Royal. His next brother down the Royals ladder,Bimbo (Tim) was a year older than I. I was older than Tuffy (Jeff) but hung around with them both upon Bimbo's (somewhat questionable) discharge from the Army.
Jeff was only 16 when he was killed upon leaving boxing practice at St. Andrews gym, and Tim was only 19. (I still miss them both)
I was to be at that party near Roosevelt HS that fateful night, but circumstances prevented it.
I was not a Royal from Roosevelt HS, but one of the Henderson Boys amalgamated into the Royals in late 1973 with the formation of the North Side Aces. A group fabricated to bring the smaller NS clubs in Wrigleyville under one umbrella with the Royals.
The Henderson Boys had previously been the Addison St. Jousters, but had been pushed back into the neighborhood in a grossly outnumbered turf war.
Fist City Royals was a pipe dream discussed over several beers at the Hamilton school yard. (Paulina and Cornelia) Those words emerged from Mike Brewer and the thought was batted around.
I was the one who drew up a few rough copies of cards and had them smuggled out of the Lane Tech print shop.
The next night, I showed Mike. We had a laugh and the topic of "Fist City" was dropped then and there. There were no "Fist City Royals" EVER except in imagination.
Randy Brewer was younger than me and Todd was a little kid then. I used to scoot him away and send him home.
The G/L's and Royals did indeed get along for a long while, although there was never any official alliance. We all had our own wars to fight and we shared a number of common enemies.
Once I moved to the NW side in early '75 I naturally hung around with all my friends in the Gaylords.
Called "that F'ing Royal" most times, but it was all in jest. FWIW, I was considered to be a Gaylord by those I hung with and those I left.
The upstarts who took on the name SCR in the mid-70's didn't have a clue in regard to friends or foe. They even jumped a Royal from Greenview and Waveland one night over by Schurz. Who do you think he went to for help?
The I/C Gaylords!! I was there when we hit them back. A combined Old School Royal and Gaylord attack on the newbies.
That week, I contacted some old friends and addressed the Royals Senior Council to advise them face-to-face of the situation. The Seniors didn't even know these little shitheads existed!
They chose not to address it as the feeling was "The more the merrier". I knew that was going to bite them later.
That's also the night I was asked if I was a Royal or a Gaylord. I replied "Gaylord" and was asked to leave the Council meeting. Three I/C Gaylords were present as announced guests. There are witnesses to that.
Yes, the older guys got along fairly well. As A Royal I spent a few nights drinking over at L/A. aside from humorous remarks, there were no problems. The newbies began to ruin that in 1976
BTW, Bam-Bam and I were also pistol whipped on that Damen Ave. bus! Sheer frustration on their parts when the gun didn't go off against my head. If it had, I'd be hanging around with Tuffy and Bimbo today instead of writing to this blog.

Addendum:
Two details I neglected to mention(memories sometimes fade with age)and one I would like to make clear.
1. They were not the 'Young Deuces', but the Jahn Deuces from the Jahn schoolyard at Wolcott and Belmont. Just thought I would clarify that for the sake of conversation.
2. I do recall the very first falling out between the Royals, and the first version of the UFO in 1973.
Anybody recall the underground rag called the Rising Up Angry?
They helped negotiate a temporary cease fire between the D's and R's.
When they reported the story along with photo's, instead of a ceasefire they announced The Deuces, Royals, and NS Aces had UNITED!
That blew things open almost immediately. I was promptly relieved of my Jousters sweater according to the rulles of engagement. Not badly, but it was taken nonetheless.
The bad press caused an uproar in the neighborhood and the war resumed.
The RUA reporter had his ass handed back to him in a paper bag by the Royals for starting more shit than they tried to stop.
Things quickly settled down between the UFO and SCR's, who by now decided to absorb the Aces under the SCR banner. Tensions and mistrust were still evident though, and only personal friendships prevailed.
3. The Roosevelt HS Royals (started by Bimbo and Whitey) siding with the Palmer Gaylords, the Harrison Gents, and finally the Popes eventually led to a wider rift.
Bimbo's intentions were to unite and set past bad feelings aside for the benefit of everyone. If not through alliances, then at least through truce. That's why Roosevelt always welcomed Popes and Gaylords alike. At least that's what he told me when I confronted him privately on the matter.
Don't know if that would've ever happend on a grand scale, but his dream obviously died with him on Leland and St. Louis.
These days, I choose to dedicate my time and efforts to keeping kids OFF the streets.
I saw way too many of my friends and acquaintences die too young for a piece of turf they didn't even pay taxes on.
With that said, I wouldn't trade my past experiences for anything. They taught me more than could ever be learned in any classroom.

I vaguely recall our chance meeting. To be perfectly honest, so many faces and names have become blurred with the passing of time.

I finally graduated from Lane in '75. Figured with 5 1/2 years of high school, who the hell needs college?! LOL
Not having a full-time job after graduation allowed me to visit the girls, then hang back at Lennies while they were in class.
Yes, I disappeared from the scene quickly. I had to at the time. Bought a one-way ticket to Houston and let things cool off for a couple years. When I returned, things had changed and the streets no longer had the same appeal.
Glad to hear BamBam was still alive as of fifteen years ago. I heard he had been killed.
I once talked Pockets into leaving the Royals but he returned to them shortly afterwards.
Swede immediately thought of me as a traitor. Big mouth in a crowd. He and I had to have a little private "discussion".
He gave me a wide berth after that.
Monster was still a figurehead at I/C, but it was Lil' Saint, (Saint from K/P, his nephew) who was holding things together then. He and I became partners, but I was more an instigator than a leader.
Most of the older guys had left the corners by then. Still a presence, but not at the corners on a daily basis. I was still out there caught up in the "high" of it all. Fun times they were.
When I did hang with Monster, we were either at his apartment or in the bars. Out on the streets we only drove together. He and I didn't hang on a regular basis, but when we did it was a wild time. Both before and after my stint in Houston.
Last I saw Lil' Saint, he wasn't doing very well.
Must've been '79 or '80. He was in terrible shape. We fed and clothed him, tried to clean him up but his mind was too far gone. He soon disappeared again. Such a waste as he had once been brilliant and had a choice of academic scholarships.

If I'm recalling the same Lil' Mike that you are...
Normally wound up and rowdy, often a one-man comedy act with a steel plate in his head.
Tended to lose sight of reality, then all self-control after 3 or 4 quarts of beer. Same guy?
I knew him long before I came on line with the Gaylords. Nice guy then, but things changed for the worse after his skull was broken.
Last I saw of him was in the late 70's at that bar on Addison across from Kilbourn. (The name escapes me)
He wasn't having one of his finest moments. Drunk and was having to answer to a few of the guys for something else he had done wrong.
Demon from I/C...can't place a face to that name for the moment. Sorry.
Most likely one of those who moved on before I came to the scene there.
The guys were stretched pretty thin in those wanning years at I/C. Lil Saint and I managed to bring in some new guys and round up a few who had drifted away.
Very rarely was there more than a dozen hanging together at once though.
One of my fondest I/C recollections involved one of my "discreet" visits from Houston in 1977.
Plan was to maintain a low profile, see a few over the weekend, then skate back out on a Sunday night.
I had been expecting to meet a relative at O'Hare. However, much to my surprise it was five I/C Gaylords who greeted me at the plane instead.
That surely counts as family..right?

One day Lil Mike showed up by I/C when I was partying with Monster, Nigger Nick, Mike G. and a few others. We had a big fall out he was threatening everyone. He wanted me to give up a piece that I had bought off him but he didn't want to pay for it or give me any security that I'd get it back.
This was after he had that plate put in his head after the Latin Lovers stuck a stick in there and mixed everything up a bit. He was never the same after that.
A few day later my house was burglerized and they went right to my room and where I had the piece stashed. I haven't seen Lil Mike since. Coincidence?? I'll never know for sure.
